Matt Hughes Future in the UFC
January 4, 2008
After his very decisive defeat for a second time to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 79, Matt Hughes is left trying to figure out what to do with his future in the sport. Many analysts believe Hughes is still a top tier fighter in his welterweight division, but he cannot seem to be fast or crafty enough to bring down his Canadian Opponent St. Pierre.
Hughes has decided to go back to the drawing board and analyze his overall game plan. He wants to do what his best for him and his family, but also wants to do his best to accommodate Dana Whites wishes and of course his fans. Dana was clear in saying he really did not want Hughes going anywhere. He even went as far as to insinuate that even if Matt Hughes was not fighting in the UFC, he would be welcomed to stay with them in other capacities. This could mean he would stay as an announcer much like Randy Couture did after his retirement.
Matt is a legendary part of the UFC league and like Randy Couture a shoe in for the hall of fame. He has been a unstoppable force in the organization since UFC 38 when he defeated Carlos Newton for the championship belt. He only very recently slowed down when he faced the young fan favorite, Georges St. Pierre.
Fans of Matt Hughes are left worried that the much hyped match between himself and Matt “the Terra” Serra will not take place at all. Hughes of course, still wants to fight Serra, but says it’s not the end of the world if the match did not occur. Though there is a lot of uncertainty with his future as a fighter in the organization, he was rock steady in his loyalties to the UFC. Stating he would not accept any offers from any other fighting leagues, he would never jump ship on the UFC and that the Ultimate Fighting Championship is family to him. Dana White could only smile and say to the press “I love when he says that”
