Georges St. Pierre on His Way Back to The Belt

December 30, 2007

As many of you may know, UFC 79: Nemesis took place yesterday evening at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Many called this the single best card of the year. It seems Dana White president of the UFC saved the best for last

The second most talked about match of the night was Georges “Rush” St. Pierre versus Matt Hughes. Both former champions, both looking for the belt again, both suffered defeat at the hands of the other man. Matt Hughes was said to have taken this interim match because he felt he had a distinct advantage of Georges who is said to need at least 5 months to train before a fight. What Matt did not know was Georges had been training for well over 5 months for this fight, he just wasn’t positive who he would be fighting when he started his training.

The match started in spectacular fashion, big entrances, both men looking as strong and intense as ever. The first round begins and the crowd begins chanting, “USA, USA” as always this does not phase Georges in the least. Then the Canadians fans begin to chant “GSP, GSP” drowning out the other chants. The fight goes on, Georges manages to take down Hughes with ease, he then rains blows down upon him from many different angles all while Hughes struggles to figure out what to do. Hughes tried to grab on and keep close to Georges chest and ride out the round, this proved ineffective as well as a series of chest slams loosened his grip significantly. Hughes ended up hanging on long enough for the round to end and Georges would have to do it all over again in the next round.

The bell rings and the second round begins. Georges stood up with Hughes for a bit landing a few blows, then shot and brought the former champion down again. Hughes was struggling on his back again, this time Georges would not allow the bell to interfere. Hughes tried a slam which resulted in a spectacular Judo through done by Georges. This was the beginning of the end for Hughes who was quickly submitted with a very deep armbar, he gave verbal submission at that point.

This brings Hughes record down to 43-6 and brings GSP up to 15-2. Georges now holds the interim belt until his opponent Matt Serra recovers from his back injury, at which point they will fight for the undisputed championship.
