UFC: 79 Machida walks through the African Assassin

December 30, 2007

Well, it looks like the octagon has claimed another Pride ring fighter. Rameau Thierry “The African Assassin” Sokoudjou was thought to be a prodigy. He entered Pride a complete under dog, just fodder for the top fighters of the league. He walked out of Pride after his first 2 matches having defeated the number nine and ten ranked fighters in the league.

He was then set up in a match last Saturday the 29th of December with the undefeated light heavyweight Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida. This would be the end of Sokoudjou’s winning streak. The match started off favorable enough, Sokoudjou landing a good punch and getting a takedown. Machida works effectively from the mat however and managed to get top control quickly, he then attempted to single out Sokoudjou’s arm. They wrestled for quite some time before referee Mario Yamasaki decided to stand them up with about a minute forty seconds left in the first round. With so little time left neither man could capitalize on this round and the match would be going on to a second round.

Round two opened with some impressive kicks from Machida. Sokoudjou brushed these off but was caught by a left which dropped him to the mat. Machida jumped on his injured opponent and tried to submit the man twice with no success. Although his submission attempts failed he inflicted even more damage on the African Assassin with a rain of forearm hits to the head. After dazing his opponent with the forearm strikes Machida tried a arm triangle, eventually submitting his opponent with about 40 seconds left in the second round.

This win by Machida elevates him to a even more impressive record of 12 wins 0 losses in the octagon. He went on at the end of his match to say he wants a title shot, fans would have to agree he certainly has worked hard for one and is earning it. No word yet on whether or not Dana White president of the UFC will give Machida his opportunity just yet, but it seems like it is in the near future if he continues performing like he has been.
