UFC: Liddell Takes out Silva

December 30, 2007

Well, the match was over a year in the making, through politics and unforeseen events the match kept getting canceled or delayed. Until last night, Saturday the 29th of December, UFC: Nemesis. The biggest MMA match in recent memory took place last night and fans were not left disappointed.

Former UFC light Heavyweight champion of the world Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell fought former Pride champion Wanderlei “The Ax murderer” Silva. This mega match marks an end to the Iceman’s losing streak at 2 losses. Silva was out to stop his own losing streak of 2 losses as well but it was not to be as the Iceman chipped away at Silva until the end of the last round. The decision went to Liddell unanimously.

The first round started off a bit slow as both fighters felt out the others defences. Both wary of succumbing to a quick knockout and dissappointing their fans. Eventually they began exchanging blows. Liddell seemed to have hurt Silva on more then one occasion but the veteran champion is known to have a rock hard chin and stood his ground. Silva emerged at the end of the first round with a large bump under his eye which looked like it would begin bleeding at any moment.

Round two began as if round one had never ended. Both men raining blows on the other, once again though Silva came out with much more damage. Silva weathered the blows occasionally with a smile on his face and then began landing his own on Liddell. Unfortunately for the former pride champion Liddells blows were much more accurate and his counters mostly landed. A slip by Liddell in the middle of the second round scared his fans, but he recovered immediately giving Silva no time to capitalize on the mistake. By the end of the second round Silva was now bleeding from under his eye and by contrast looking much worse then Chuck.

In the third it was more impressive standup from the start to finish, of particular note was Liddell landing a spinning backfist on Silva. Silva recoiled and Liddell moved in to finish him off, just as it looked like Liddell would get the TKO, Silva came back punching hard. Unfortunately it was not enough to make up for the other 2 rounds and Silva lost to unanimous decision.

Both fighters demonstrated they were out of their losing slumps, Liddell came out on top this time but  Silva was no pushover and will be looking to end his losing streak in spectacular fashion in his next match whenever that may be.
